Sales Is About Relationships, Not Transactions
Sales has been in my blood my whole life. But what you actually have to realize is that sales is not about a transaction—it’s about building relationships.
At about 10 years old, I was already in sales. But in reality, I was building relationships and friendships. Now, in my mid-50s, that truth really hits home. All those years in sales weren’t about making a quick dollar or just another transaction—they were about building lifelong relationships and friendships through the years.
Whether I was trying to get a yard to mow, washing cars, working at a plumbing and electrical store, doing a small electrical job with friends, or selling clothes in a men’s store, it was always about connecting with people. In college, I sold cars, and after graduation, I sold mobile homes in my hometown. From there, I joined the Hooters Racing Team out of Atlanta, Georgia, traveling the NASCAR circuit for about a year and building relationships with vendors, businesses, and even some of the NASCAR stars’ family members.
Then in 1997, I transitioned into working for my family, running my dad’s truck brokerage business for 20 years. My job was finding accounts and loads for 18-wheelers across the East Coast—basically matchmaking shippers and carriers and earning a percentage in the middle. Again, it was about building lasting relationships. But while I learned a lot, it wasn’t a career I loved. The stress of that industry was taking a toll, and my wife—who worked alongside me—saw just how unhappy I was. She encouraged me to follow my passion for real estate.
Getting my real estate license was the best move I ever made. I often tell people: if it were easy, everybody would do it. Real estate is not easy—but I love it. And if it ever turns into “just work” for me, I’ll find something else where I can continue building relationships with people.
Along the way, I’ve also been blessed to put together a relationship with my business partner, Wyatt Poindexter. It’s not just about business—he’s become one of my close friends. And like I always say, we’re just getting started. The excitement of being a Managing Partner and owner alongside Wyatt at The Agency brings me joy every day.
We have so many dedicated agents at The Agency. Collaboration, friendships, and learning from each other is a true blessing—and that’s something I’m very thankful for. We’re building something a little bit different than any other brokerage around. Being part of a boutique brokerage with global reach has expanded my business and given me the chance to grow alongside some of the best in the industry.
If you’re looking to buy or sell your home—or if you’re looking to join a brokerage that’s just a little bit different than any other brokerage around—please reach out to me at The Agency.
